Apple: The New Mobile Gatekeeper

Development for the iPhone must be encouraged if truly great apps are to abound.

Developers are rushing to the iPhone in droves. It seems there is a lot of money and recognition to be had for the creator of the first iPhone killer app or game (or any app at this point). There is an opportunity at this early stage for a moderately successful application or game to ride the iHype wave into the land of super sales and app stardom. There’s just one problem. Apple stands in the way. The force behind iTunes plays guardian to their quickly growing app store and their not letting everyone in. Erick Schonfeld from TechCrunch says, “There are rumors of Apple blocking apps that compete with its core businesses and applications. Apple cannot play favorites if it wants to become the dominant mobile Web platform.” I agree with Eric. Apple must encourage development for the iPhone the way  Blizzard encourages add-on development for their World of WarCraft. They must serve as guides, not gatekeepers.
