Doom Classic released by id Software is available in the App Store for iPhone. Doom is the game which needs no introduction because of 3-D graphics and action intense gameplay. The $7 game features 36 levels across 4 episodes: Shores of Hell, Knee-Deep in the Dead, Thy Flesh Consumed and Inferno.
Doom’s combination of games, mazes to explore and enemies to shoot is as fun filled as it was sixteen years ago. On the iPhone touch, you can turn the game on, play to blast the demons, search one of the three keys required to exit from the particular stage, press the Home button and come back to the place where you left off. You do not need to save the game – the game is smart enough to handle that automatically for you. Whether you are familiar or not with the stages, but the challenges of managing armor shielding, limited supply of health and multiple weapons have the right balance of both, fun and risk. The joy to discover a plasma gun, a chainsaw and a shotgun remain amusing, whereas the terror of being confronted by the powerful demons and needing power-ups to be alive are engrossing. A multiplayer mode, including competitive and cooperative access to all the levels from the beginning, is based upon Wi-Fi.
In Doom Classic, you just have to run through the stages blasting everything that comes in your way with powerful weapons, and pick up the keys to pass through the doors. It’s a very simple game. You enter rooms one after another filled with monsters of growing numbers.
Doom Classic has 4 episodes – 1 new chapter and 3 classics; and are unlocked from the beginning. The game not allows you to hop in and out of the stages, but also allows you to skip first few episodes if you are not interested. Doom Classic offers multiplayer options over local Wi-Fi. You can play competitively or even with up to four players.
Doom Classic places a firing button on the right of the screen and a turn and move joy pad on the left. You can tap doors and switches that are directly in front of you to activate them. Tapping on the upper left of your iPhone’s screen opens the overhead auto-map which is created by the game as you explore each stage. Visual and audio elements of Doom Classic are similar to the original but with some clean-up work.
Overall, Doom Classic is a wonderful port of a classic game. Fans of Doom Classic, who carry iPhone in their pocket, will surely enjoy playing it.
