Taito's Space Invaders Infinity Gene, has moved from Japanese cell phones to the iPhone App Store. At first glance, Space Invaders Infinity Gene seems like the Space invaders Extreme, but it takes a different route which offers a customizable experience. The game changes over time, adding new abilities, graphics, and levels.
Space Invaders lets you walk down through a path of shooters, beginning with a glance of Space Invaders. Each stage of the game provides new capabilities as well as weapons to your ship and can also unlock additional options for the game itself. You start off as a simple right/left moving single shooter, gain advanced weapons and the ability of moving freely around the screen. The touch screen controls offered by the game seems to be perfect because it allows you to touch and hold any part of the iPhone’s screen and move the ship. Evolutionary power-ups include advanced weapons like search laser, lock-on, gravity, rapid shot and wave.
The more advanced weapons and extra lives come in hand in the later stages as the difficulty level grow up. Infinity Gene also comes with “Easy” and “Normal” difficulties. After every few levels, the background of the game changes and sometimes the scoring system also changes, adding new ways and new bonuses to build the score. The enemies fly around the screen and shoot various beams and bombs at you, sometimes even creating roadblocks for you around the length of the screen.
The game includes a “Music” option which allows you to pick a song from your iPhone’s library and play a song-specific generated game level. This means that when you again play the song, you will get the same level.
Infinity Gene is a wonderful effort by Taito to bring a modern version of Space Invaders to iPhone. With music-generated levels, varied game play and many unlockables, the game will remain on iPhone for a long time.
