Sword Of Fargoal is one of the best retro games developed by Jeff McCord. Fargoal is, in many ways, a creative game and has been popular among the retro game lovers, with versions written for computers, Mac and now for iPhone.
The premise of the game is simple enough: you play a role of an adventurer with a task of finding the titular sword. The latter stage is located deep in a multilevel dungeon which is inhabited by various creatures-from giant rats to horrifying monsters, who intend to kill you. Making progress through dungeon lets you gather items like spell scroll and potions, and even collecting gold coins which you can convert in the your experience points which in turn, allow your power to advance.
As you move down deeper and deeper into the stages-that are arbitrarily generated and, therefore guarantees a slight different gameplay every time. It’s not only your character whose power grows, but enemies also become powerful and faster which makes it tough to beat them. Sometimes, this causes the game to be highly frustrating. While fighting with your enemies, you only have the options of watching your character’s attempt to kill the enemies or just withdrawing and trying to escape.
The graphics and sound of the game are deceptively Spartan. Fargoal displays a uniquely modern look through 3-D effects and a very fluid interface. The game displays a “smart button” which allows you to perform appropriate action at any time- opening a chest, opening a door and so on.
During the first hour of playtime, you may find yourself running around, unable to pace your character at the right position. Eventually, as you get accustomed to the interface, it becomes less of a problem, but it will only happen when you don’t get frustrated and give up first.
